Arizona Pool Barrier Laws & Requirements for 2025 Published July 7, 2025 | Slide Right Doors Blog | Author: Janet Pantazis
Pool Safety Matters More Than Ever As Arizona temperatures rise, so do the risks associated with unprotected swimming pools. Every year, dozens of preventable accidents occur due to inadequate or missing pool barriers. That’s why staying compliant with Arizona’s latest pool barriers laws isn’t just a legal obligation—it’s a matter of safety.
Whether you're installing a new pool or updating an older pool or installing new doors on a property with a pool, understanding Arizona’s 2025 pool barrier regulations can help protect children, prevent accidents, and avoid fines. At Slide Right Doors, we're committed to making safety simple. Let’s walk through what you need to know.
🏠 Using the House as Part of the Barrier
If relying on walls and doors, you must:
Install self-closing, self-latching doors that swing outward, with latches/knobs ≥54″ high
High knob and self-closing hinges on French Doors No pet doors or removable screens
Sliding glass doors must be self-closing/latching with safety latch >54" from the ground.
Slide Right Closer & Latch on a Bi-part Sliding Door Windows: Below 60″ to pool deck and within 5 ft of water must be tempered; others need latches at ≥54″, wire mesh, or stops
Wall Mount Alarms
While some cities only require wall-mounted alarms to meet pool code compliance, we strongly recommend installing an additional safety latch. This added layer of protection helps prevent children or guests from accidentally opening a door and gaining unsupervised access to the pool area.

🔐 Why This Matters
Prevents accidental drownings, especially among young children.
Helps avoid petty offenses, fines, and legal liability.
Ensures compliance with municipal building codes—inspectors are vigilant.
If using your home as part of the barrier, door/window hardware and alarms are essential.
Gates
Must be self-closing and self-latching, open outward away from the pool.
Latch height: Minimum 54″ above ground—or, if latch is on pool side, release must be ≥5″ below top of gate, with no ≤½″ openings within 24″ of release.
✔️ What You Should Do
Inspect your fence/gate: Verify height, spacing, latch operation, and swing direction.
If using house walls, ensure all doors/windows meet self-latching or alarm requirements.
Contact your city or county for local amendments—especially for alarms, pet doors, or tempered glass.
Complete barrier fixes within 45 days, if cited.
We're here to help!
Pool barrier requirements are regulated at both the state and municipal levels in Arizona, and specific codes can vary significantly between cities and counties. Factors such as Door closing systems and wall mount alarms may differ depending on your jurisdiction. If you are unsure whether your property meets the applicable pool safety standards, we recommend verifying the current code with your local building or pool safety inspector.
